Kentucky Pilgrimage

July 5, 2020 by Susan Burkholder 2 Comments

Last winter my friend Amy and I discovered neither of us had ever been to the Creation Museum or the Ark Encounter in Kentucky and we both wanted to go.

A few weeks ago, I asked Amy if she was still interested. “Both museums are open again. And we’ll probably never again have a summer that’s so empty.”

“Sure,” Amy agreed. I also invited my friend Charity to come along. Like Amy, Charity is a schoolteacher, and she also had never been to either museum.

So last week, we made the eight-hour-drive to Cincinnati, where we had an Airbnb less than an hour’s drive from both museums. We went to the Creation Museum on Monday, the Ark Encounter on Tuesday, and drove home again on Wednesday.

For the most part, our trip was uneventful— which is a good thing! We really enjoyed both places, and felt the trip was worth the time and money. (FYI, during 2020, children 10 and under are free). Both museums are located in the Kentucky countryside, the staff seemed super nice, and there’s lots to see! (I confess to skimming some of the dinosaur facts.)

So here’s a few photos from our trip.

Charity and Amy in front of the Creation Museum.
Me inside the Creation Museum. Telling the story of Genesis is at the heart of both museums.
Dinosaur skeleton from Colorado. The skull on the right is the actual skull, it was too heavy to mount with the rest of the skeleton and the scientists want to be able to study it.
The Ark Encounter is built according the dimensions in the book of Genesis, and seeing the structure of this amazing building was worth the trip for me. It’s the largest timber-frame building in the world.
Inside the ark there were spaces for water and food supplies and cages for animals.
Yes, Noah brought bats on the Ark.
The three levels of the ark— full of wonderful exhibits.
Outside the Ark, there was a kangaroo enclosure in the petting zoo we could walk through. “Stay on the path. If a kangaroo hops to you, you can pet his back,” a staff member told us. One kangaroo was very friendly. He loved Amy’s purse. We all petted him— his fur felt like carpet.
I can almost hear the kangaroo on the left saying, “Get up, lazybones!”
Our last night in Cincinnati. We walked across this bridge from Ohio to Kentucky.

After our mini vacation, it was time to hit the road and head home, with great memories and new things to think about. It’s an amazing world we live in!
