A sign beside the drive leading to the mountain cabin read "Zephere's Rock: Population 1." Further down the gravel road, a "Don't Tread on Me" flag fluttered in the November breeze. This is a place where people come to be left alone, I thought. I was getting a few of minutes of solitude myself, taking a brief walk on the mountain road to enjoy the yellow leaves and morning sunshine outside of the cabin I was staying in for the weekend. I've often written about how us Lancaster County … [Read more...] about A Peachy Cabin Weekend

The Smoky Sierra Nevada Mountains
As Lancaster County got drenched in the remains of Hurricane Ida last week, three of my colleagues and I were out west where the land is dry and the air smells faintly of smoke from the wildfires. I first noticed the smell when we got out of the airport in Reno, Nevada and stood on the sidewalk waiting for our hotel shuttle on Saturday evening. We were feeling thankful to be in Reno on schedule. The trip from Philadelphia had taken a literally heart-racing turn at our layover in Phoenix— our … [Read more...] about The Smoky Sierra Nevada Mountains
Pennsylvanians Drive Across Georgia, Counting Dollar Generals and Eating Boiled Peanuts
"There's jokes about lots of Dollar Generals in the South," I say to my sister when I see the discount chain's black and yellow sign. "Let's count how many we see before we get to Marilyn's house." "There's a cotton field," my … [Read more...] about Pennsylvanians Drive Across Georgia, Counting Dollar Generals and Eating Boiled Peanuts
Getting Ready for Alaska
Many years ago, I had a co-worker who was an Alaskan living in Pennsylvania, and she would tell me stories from Alaska— how her parents had driven to Alaska in a school bus and proceeded to raise their family of 18 children in the land of the long winters, permafrost, and grizzly bears. More than a dozen … [Read more...] about Getting Ready for Alaska
Bicycle Memories
Biking season is back for fair-weather cyclists in Lancaster County—and I just got a new bicycle last evening. This is the third time I've become the owner of a new bike. My first bikes were the hand-me-downs my brothers and sisters and I used making endless loops on the driveway, before we were allowed to venture to places like the library and Sharp Shopper. My favorite was the pink and white bike with the big banana seat. Someone, maybe me, had made the mistake of putting stickers on the … [Read more...] about Bicycle Memories
